The Swiss Federal Tax Authority (FTA) has recently issued new guidance announcing that next year, the filing of VAT returns by electronic means will become compulsory.

Already, nearly half of Swiss VAT-registered businesses use the online platform “AFC SuisseTax” to file their VAT returns. Next year, electronic filing of VAT returns will become mandatory and only businesses that make specific written requests to the FTA shall receive paper VAT returns.

The FTA strongly encourages businesses to switch to the online system now in readiness for next year.

In addition to the AFC SuisseTax platform, the FTA plans on launching a new platform, “Décompte TVA easy,” in 2020 so that businesses can file VAT returns online without having to register with an individual account.  Fiscal representatives will be able to print off a VAT return for signing before submitting it.

The FTA will publish updates on the progress of this initiative as they occur.

As we can see, the world of VAT is leaving paper compliance processes well and truly in the past.
