Ireland | VAT Hike to Food Supplements Delayed till November 2019

At almost the final hour, the Irish Revenue Agency’s highly controversial move to expand the application of the standard Irish VAT rate to all food supplements has been postponed.

We recently reported that from 1st March 2019, certain vitamins, minerals and fish oils which until now have fallen within the scope of the zero rate of VAT will be taxed at the 23% standard rate instead.

But because of widespread opposition to this VAT increase, under legislation enacted on 26th February 2019, the measure has been delayed until 1st November 2019.

In the meantime, the Irish Revenue Agency will scrutinise the possible economic effects of this planned policy change.
