As reported last year the Gulf Cooperation Committee is looking to introduce VAT throughout the region though this had been delayed.

It was recently reported that a date of 2018 would be set for the introduction of VAT throughout the GCC with the final touches being put on the proposal.

However, it has now been reported that VAT could be introduced in Oman by the middle of next year, or even earlier according to a member of the Majlis Al Shura’s economic committee.

It was also commented that VAT would not be implemented unilaterally throughout the GCC, but rather has to be part of a Gulf-wide decision and if all GCC states agree on a deadline, then some could implement it ahead of the others.

It is therefore possible that the GCC region may see the introduction of VAT in some parts of the region as soon as next year.
