Polish minister denies VAT rise

Thursday June 4, 2009

A Polish minister has spoken out against reports that VAT is set to be increased in the country.

Maciej Grabowski, the government’s deputy finance minister, has claimed that suggestions by national newspaper Polska that the rate would be increased by one per cent are wide of the mark.

According to news agency Reuters, the suggestion came after analysts proposed that the government’s budget deficit is currently unrealistic.

However, Mr Grabowski told a news conference: "The finance ministry is not working on a change in VAT. Today’s reports are not true."

One European nation where a VAT increase is likely in the near future is Estonia.

According to Baltic Business News, the country’s government is believed to keen on increasing the rate by two per cent in order to collect extra revenues.
